Spring 2010 Meetings
For more than 50 years, Becker Professional Education has helped equip professionals and their companies for the challenges of tomorrow in the Accounting, Finance and Project Management professions. This first meeting of the Spring 2010 semester will be held in Kedzie 004. The social will be at 6:30pm with food and drink provided, and the professional meeting will begin at 7:00pm. Announcements for the Bond fund,New York trip, and Telefund will be presented.
- Edward Jones
Edward Jones serves nearly 7 million investors and we have more offices than any other investment firm in America. We attribute a great deal of our success to our principles and personal, long-term approach to investing. Edward Jones has consistently been ranked among the best companies to work for by FORTUNE Magazine and our employees tend to stay with us for years. Since we're still a privately owned company, Edward Jones has a very personal feel that's almost like family. And we're very proud of that. This meeting will be held in Kedzie 004. The social will be at 6:30pm with food and drink provided, and the professional meeting will begin at 7:00pm. Our presentor, D.C. Hackerott, is a financial advisor with Edward Jones.

Please turn in the New York trip application by Monday, February 1st at 5pm in the SFA Box located in Calvin Hall 117D.
- Spirit Aerosystems
Spirit AeroSystems was established in 2005 when Onex Corporation acquired what is now Spirit AeroSystems from Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The company's headquarters are in Wichita, Kan., the Air Capital of the World, with additional operations in Tulsa and McAlester, Okla., Prestwick, Scotland, and Samlesbury, England. This meeting will start with as usual with a social and business meeting at 6:30pm and 7:00pm respectively.
- Northwestern Mutual
Northwestern Mutual is a 152-year-old mutual company serving the insurance and investment needs of more than three million clients. During our long history, we have protected our clients and paid life insurance dividends every year since 1872. In fact, while not guaranteed, we have paid more in total individual life insurance dividends to policyowners than any other company in the industry for the past 12 years. This meeting will start with as usual with a social and business meeting at 6:30pm and 7:00pm respectively. Ashley Smith will be presenting.
- Bruce Shubert
Bruce Shubert, Administration & Finance V.P., will be presenting. This meeting will start with as usual with a social and business meeting at 6:30pm and 7:00pm respectively.
- Dr. John Graham
Dr. Graham currently serves as Chairman and CEO of Graham Capital Management, Inc., as a Director of several financial institutions, manufacturing companies, and not-for-profit organizations. This meeting will start with as usual with a social and business meeting at 6:30pm and 7:00pm respectively. SFA Officer Elections for 2010-2011 Academic year will follow.
Fall 2009 Meetings
- Informational Meeting
We had a great turnout for our first meeting of the school year in the Big XII Room after a social in the Cats Pause Room. We were lucky to have our distinguished faculty there to introduce themselves to the members and to share their words of wisdom. Laura Needs from Career & Employment Services also joined us to give us tips on how to market ourselves for the upcoming career fair. The officers introduced themselves to the members and we closed the meeting by talking about the exciting events to come this semester.
SFA was pleased to have Jesse Moore and Jordan Trivette from ConocoPhillips join us for a great discussion about opportunities at COP.
- Koch Industries
Five former SFA members now at Koch Industries - Corbin Navis, Carrie Swartz, Brandon Herrmann, Hailey Berry and Matt Hewitt - led a great discussion about opportunities at Koch and career success.
- Career Fair
SFA members were again selected as one of two College of Business student organizations to represent the College.
- Kansas City Trip
SFA members traveled to Kansas City for the afternoon to visit with Scott Wittman, Senior Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager at American Century, and then presentations on the CFA program and getting a job in the finance industry.
- KSU Foundation
We would like to thanks Lois Cox from the KSU Foundation for joining us. She discussed with our members the Foundation, the CFA & CFP, and the advantages of the Bloomberg system.
- Academic Majors Fair
SFA members had a second service opportunity this semester by helping staff the Finance booth at the Academic Majors Fair in the Union. Thanks to all who volunteered!
- Special THURSDAY night meeting
Jacob Urban, a Pricing Analyst from Bank of New York, was able to join us in Calvin 209 on Tuesday. Mr. Urban, a K-State grad, discussed his role at the Bank of New York as well as his transition to NYC and Wall Street job search.
- American Century
We were pleased to have Jonathan Bauman, Client Portfolio Manager of American Century and President of the Kansas City CFA Society, back again with us to talk about the CFA and how important it has become these days. We had a great discussion over the benefits of being a CFA charterholder and how to best prepare yourself for the exams. - KeyBank Real Estate Capital
Darin Mainquist, Tony Nemec, Chris Snell, and Joel Yoest from KeyBank Real Estate Capital joined us for the first time to talk about their company and the real estate industry. We want to thank the four of them for coming and hope to see them again!
- IIM trip to Chicago
SFA students were invited to join students from the IIM program for Morningstar's Stocks Forum.
- Boston Trip
SFA students traveled to Boston, making visits to Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Bain Capital, and Bain and Co.
- First Annual SFA Tailgate
SFA students, alumni, and faculty gathered at our first annual tailgate before the KSU v. Mizzou game in the Cat Town Tailgate area. This event turned out to be a great opportunity for students to network, socialize with other finance students, and grab some great food and drinks before the game. Thanks to everyone who helped put this together and participated!
Cerner associates Kurt Schiller and John Newman, both K-State and SFA grads, joined us on Tuesday. The two discussed what Cerner does, the healthcare market and what the future looks like for it, and a little about their recruiting efforts. Zac Sobba, Bond Fund Manager, discussed what the committee has been working on all semester and their results. Elections were also held; congratulations to Charles Mersman, Charissa Dugan, and Johnny Hermes for being elected Spring 2010 officers! And a big thanks to our outgoing officers, Zac Sobba, Seth Auld, Lindsey Stiles, and Meagan Boyett for doing a great job this semester. We will miss you!
- Warren Buffett
Selected members of SFA had the opportunity to travel to Omaha to meet with Warren Buffett for the second time this year!
SFA members attended a luncheon with Gary Bauer, a CPA and a K-State alumnus at the Alumni Center.
- Annual Holiday Party
Our last meeting of the semester was our holiday party, where we had snacks and watched a movie to celebrate a great semester for SFA. See you all next year!
