January

  • Tuesday, Jan. 23: State Street
    • Doug Burris spoke on State Street's role in the investment management industry and the career opportunities available for finance students.
    • Upcoming events for the semester were discussed including the New York City trip and other trip opportunities, Telefund and the newly endowed SFA scholarship fund.
    • The Bond Fund Committee met to discuss fund strategy and potential acquisitions at the conclusion of the SFA meeting.

February

  • Tuesday, Feb. 6: Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City
    • Fed representatives spoke about career opportunities with the Fed as well as gave some great advice on interview and career success.
    • SFA scholarships are open to all majors.
  • Telefund 2007
    • For the second consecutive year, the Student Finance Association was recognized by the dean as the top volunteer student group from the College of Business. The money raised by Telefund goes directly for student scholarships, the money SFA earns goes toward SFA scholarships, and SFA received a pizza party from the dean for being the top group.

    • Tarin Meredith and Andrew Yacenda gave an overview of Raytheon and its transition into Beechcraft/Hawker, opportunities there, and great career advice in general.
  • Tuesday, March. 27: Applebee's CEO Dave Goebel
    • A very information discussion of Applebee's and its industry as well as issues facing the CEO of a publically traded company.

April

  • Thursday, April 5: Kansas City Trip
    • Cerner - presentations by Leigh Perkins, Kurt Schiller and a tour of the Vision Center
    • Kansas City Board of Trade - discussion of futures, exchange issues, and a visit to the floor
    • Tortoise Capital Management - overview of Tortoise and investment management with Terry Matlack, Zach Hamel, and Rob Thummel
  • April 9: Kent Gasaway, Portfolio Manager at Kornitzer Capital Management
    • Mr. Gasaway, a K-State Business School graduate, is a CFA charterholder and a Portfolio Manager at Kornitzer Capital Management. He oversees the Buffalo Family of funds and has over 23 years of experience in investment management, working with both equity and fixed-income securities. We look forward to having him discuss the selection criteria for companies in his fund, research methods and other important topics.

  • April 12 - 14: Chicago Trip
    • Trip included a visit with the CEO of Aon Corp. Greg Case (2007 CBA Outstanding Financial Executive), Aon's Chief Risk Officer, and a visit to Goldman Sachs.

May

  • May 5: Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting
    • A number of students attended the annual "Investors' Woodstock" in Omaha, NE. Warren Buffett discussed his company's performance and answered questions for several hours. Mr. Bill Gates was also in attendance.
